My work featured in the Cal Poly class of 2018 BFA show, “This Must be the Place.”
I make paintings with color fields and simplified shapes of home environments populated with visual doppelgängers. I am interested in how identity is interpreted through self-reflection and how it is perceived by others. Social mirroring occurs when people must adapt to new environments. I am intrigued by The Optimal Distinctiveness Theory which hypothesizes that people are in a continual quest to balance distinctiveness and assimilation in social environments. This quest is a natural step in our own development, but can also be an eerie and unsettling experience that potentially leads to homogeneity.
In my work, I investigate the Chameleon effect, where one unconsciously shifts behavior to blend in with their current surroundings. I use acrylic paint in striking neon colors to portray the interaction between doppelgängers and constructed environments. I experiment with formal aspects of color, transparency, and repeating objects to create patterns that intertwine the figure and surrounding space. Overlapping forms and vibrating colors communicate the struggle between interpreting oneself, the ways others perceive us, and the way we want to be perceived.
